What educators are saying

The kids really loved this activity and we ended up having competitions with it and they really got into the lesson.

Description

Students can further explore the meaning of statistical measures of center: mean, median, and mode by experimentation. This is a fun activity to explore measures of center. I use this activity with my Algebra 1 students when we start our descriptive data unit before we start talking about graphical displays (i.e. box plots, histograms, etc.). We compare measures of centers and analyze when it is appropriate to use a specific measure.

Included:

1. Collect data from Paper Airplane

2. Bracket to conduct a competition

3. Worksheet with extra questions

Note: You may want to group students in pairs.

Use statistics appropriate to the shape of the data distribution to compare center (median, mean) and spread (interquartile range, standard deviation) of two or more different data sets.
Interpret differences in shape, center, and spread in the context of the data sets, accounting for possible effects of extreme data points (outliers).
