What does this kindergarten measurement set include?

This kindergarten math set is designed to give students meaningful practice with beginning measurement concepts and vocabulary:

✔ Illustrated Measurement Vocabulary Posters
These five posters (each included in color and black and white versions) define the five measurable attributes: length, height, weight, capacity, and width. Each poster includes a simple, child-friendly explanation and an illustrated example.

✔ Illustrated “I Can” Statements (Aligned to CCSS)
These three statements are written in child-friendly language and are useful for providing a focal point for each lesson. These statements are aligned with the Common Core Measurement and Data Standards.

✔ “Turn and Talk” Activity Cards
Each of these nine cards provides an oral language prompt to promote the development of math vocabulary and to give students experience with explaining their thinking and reasoning.

✔ “Move and Learn” Activity Cards
Each of these nine cards includes a movement activity that allows students to engage their bodies while practicing a kindergarten measurement concept. These activities are great for carpet time, transitions, and for quick review throughout the year.

✔ Measurement Vocabulary Cards
After introducing each measurement vocabulary term to students, post these 24 word cards in an accessible spot in the classroom for reference.

✔ Measurement Picture Prompts
This section contains picture prompts to get students using measurement vocabulary orally and in writing. In this section, you’ll find:

•2 Full-Color Picture Prompts: These can be projected in a whole-group setting or printed and shared with a small group. Have students talk about the scenes using measurement vocabulary such as shorter, longer, and wider.

•Measurement Vocabulary Poster: Included in color and black and white versions, this mini-poster gives students visual clues to their measurement vocabulary.

•Picture Prompt Writing Pages: Each picture prompt is also included in a black and white version for writing. These pages come with labels for the pictures, a mini version of the vocabulary poster, and two different line styles (choose which works best for your students).

These activities allow students to use connecting cubes to measure length and to use a balance scale to compare the weights of common classroom items.

▶ 3 Cut-and-Glue Measurement Pages
These worksheets allow students to compare and describe objects using measurable attributes.

▶ 4 Cut-and-Glue Sorting/Classifying Pages
These sheets give students practice at sorting objects into categories and counting the number of objects in each category.

How to Use These Kindergarten Measurement Printables:

The materials included in this kindergarten math set can be used to supplement your teaching of measurement standards (Measurement and Data). Introduce the measurement posters and vocabulary cards to students before displaying them in the classroom. As you introduce each measurable attribute, share the applicable poster and word card with the group. Have students brainstorm examples and practice using the vocabulary words in sentences. Then place the visual aids where students can easily reference them. As you work through the unit, model referencing the word cards and posters.

Use the “Turn and Talk” and “Move and Learn” cards to introduce and/or close out your measurement lessons. These cards engage all students and give them opportunities to use their measurement vocabulary. They also work well as brain breaks and transition activities throughout the day.

Consider introducing the measurable attribute worksheets in a small-group setting. Because of the vocabulary-rich nature of this unit, several of the included activities aren’t designed for pre-readers to complete independently. If working in a small group isn’t practical, you may want to project the worksheet as students work to make it easier for them to follow along as you read.
