U.S. presidents learning songs often recycle folk tunes, making recitation confusing. And many U.S. states and capital learning songs list all the fifty states in a single tune, which is overwhelming. In contrast, my songs have original, catchy tunes and divide the information in smaller groups.

This packet facilitates the memorization of the fifty states and capitals by dividing the states into 9 regions and tackling each region, one at a time. Each region has a correlating learning song and set of worksheets. Regions include: Pacific, Mountain, Southwest, Central (Mid-West), South, Great Lakes, Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, New England.

About the lesson plan: The lesson plan breaks up the presidents into eight small groups, which are covered one group at a time, over 8 weeks. Each week, teachers are advised to review previously covered material, listen to the song, and introduce the next group. Active instruction time may be as little as 15 minutes a week. Repetition is the key, not busy work. Methods for reviewing material as wells as suggestions for customization, including condensing the program to 4 weeks, are included in the plan.

About the worksheets: Although not necessary, it may be helpful to homeschoolers or classroom teachers to provide worksheets to reinforce material or to use for testing and accountability. For each week, there is Copy Work, Crossword Puzzle with Name Matching, a Place in Order challenge, and a Hidden Code Word Search. While younger students will enjoy the word search, older students can solve the hidden code after completing the word search. Each hidden code is an inspiring presidential quote.

About the Independent Study Syllabus: The syllabus outlines the worksheets as a convenient checklist to ensure all the material is reviewed. The syllabus can be used as a guide by teachers, or as a guide for independent students. With both homeschoolers and classroom teachers in mind, this syllabus allows for the memorization of the presidents to be completely self-led, or even an extra credit exercise.
