Description
Introducing or reviewing metaphors with your students? This two-sided worksheet will be helpful in concept introduction, as well as in enhancing student understanding.
On side one, students use a scaffolded format to fill in the basics of metaphors and why they're a commonly used form of figurative language. Students review examples, and then practice identifying the point being made in a series of metaphors.
On side two, students read a free-verse poem containing several examples of metaphor. Students identify and explain each metaphor within the poem, and then practice turning the figurative language in the poem into literal description. As a final activity, students are asked to explain why the original metaphors included in the poem are more powerful for a reader (as compared to the student-created literal version).
Answer keys are included, and are great to display during the note-taking process.
Ink saver (border-free) version included!
