Description
Middle school music sub plans for non-musical subs! This resource contains 3 independent work packets based off of the Ohio music standards for grades 6-8.
Packet #1: Compare/Contrast Music of Different Cultures
Students will read about musical traditions from Germany (Bavarian folk music) and Africa (Ghanaian drumming). They will then complete a Venn diagram (using pre-written statements about both musical cultures). Finally, there is a word search using the new terms.
- 2.5 page reading passage
- Venn diagram comparing/contrasting both cultures (statements provided)
- Wordsearch
Packet #2: Treble and Bass Clef Notes
Students will read a quick review of the staff, treble/bass clef, and look at a reference of note names on the staff. They will then name and draw notes in each clef, complete a color-by-note mystery grid picture, and then decide which clef a note is in based on the letter it is given.
- 1 page review sheet
- 1 page note naming/drawing
- Color-by-note mystery grid picture
- 1 page "which clef?" activity
Packet #3: Evaluate Instrument Groupings
Students will read about traditional instrument groupings for the symphony orchestra, bluegrass band, Javanese gamelan, and Hindustani classical music. They will then be asked reflection questions (some of which are higher-level thinking). After that, they will sort the instruments into each style of music, and finally, complete a crossword puzzle with terms from all 4 ensembles.
- 2.5 page reading passage
- 1.5 page reflection questions
- Instrument grouping sorting activity
- Crossword puzzle
Answer keys are included, as well as sample answers for packet #3.
No prep--just print and go!
