What educators are saying

This has been a really great resource for me to introduce robots to my STEM class, whose purpose is to program robots. I will be using this again in the future. Thanks!
My students really enjoyed these activities and learned that they struggled with searching on the web and problem solving where to find the answers

What’s included in the middle school robotics unit?

    • Introduction to Robotics lesson - In this lesson, your middle school students will explore common misconceptions about robots in a human barometer activity. Then they participate in a webquest to learn the characteristics and components of real-world robots. Finally, students will apply their new knowledge to solve a cut and paste puzzle.

    • Real-World Robot Research Project - In this project, students will research a real-world robot of their choice. They will discover whether the robot performs dull, dirty, or dangerous tasks and identify its components. Then they will create a digital or paper poster and present their robot to their classmates in a gallery walk activity.

    • The Effects of Robots on Society - In this activity, students will learn about the positive and negative effects of robots on human society. They will watch and video and read an article to gather evidence and then write an essay about the impacts of robots on human safety, comfort, and economics.

    • Robotics Choice Board - In this extension or review activity for middle school robotics, students will choose from a variety of activities that interest them and build on concepts learned in previous lessons.

    • “Rise of the Robots” Movie Guide and Activities - This resource accompanies PBS NOVA “Rise of the Robots” (2016). This engaging documentary will teach students about robots in the real world and their impacts on society. They will follow contestants in the US Department of Defense’s DARPA Challenge as they build rescue robots and experience highs and lows throughout the competition. (Note: This video has been taken down from the PBS website. It can be accessed on Youtube here.)

    • Intro to Robotics Quiz - Use this 10-question quiz to formally assess students learning at the end of the robotics unit. Students will apply their new robotics knowledge to answer multiple-choice and short answer questions.

Each of the robotics resources described above also has:

✔ Printable, Google, and Easel versions of the student activities and worksheets

✔ Detailed lesson plans and slideshows for easy lesson facilitation

✔ Easy-to-use grading rubrics and assessments

X No specific robots, software, or programs are required!
