What educators are saying

While we didn't have class time to do the weaving techniques, we used the resources of pattern and colors to decorate paper strips and weave a paper mat. My students loved learning how to wrap a Kente cloth and trying to follow the rules of wearing with traditional fabric, as well.
My 8th-grade students were hooked into weaving by making the connection to Kente cloth. They were able to see designs and it inspired them to create next level designs for their own weaving.

Description

Weaving is a student favorite! Middle School and High School art students will enjoy combining yarns to create dazzling patterns with this easy textiles lesson!

Introduce your students to gorgeous African Kente woven fabrics!

  • Your students will learn about the symbolic colors and meanings that the designs in these traditional fabrics represent.
  • Students will learn how to weave specific designs into their own woven "fabric" using yarn and inexpensive cardboard looms.
  • The step-by-step instructional handouts make it easy for your students to learn how to weave stripes, diagonals, triangles, diamonds, squares, and rectangles, and a stair-step pattern
  • Students enjoy figuring out how to weave different shapes and should be able to come up with their own "free choice" design to finish their weaving using the skills they learned.
  • This project has a very high success rate
  • It lends itself to a lot of one on one time with your students to build relationships
  • Increases collaboration within the class as students tend to help each other along as they progress through the weaving projects together. This helps your students make more friends and improve the overall classroom climate!
  • This product makes teaching weaving to young artists much easier!

This 21-page Resource Includes:

  • A detailed lesson plan
  • An additional introductory warm-up lesson that educates students about African Kente Cloths made in Ghana and the meaning of the designs as well as how the cloth is traditionally used and worn in Africa.
  • 3 Handout printables are included to support the introductory lesson.
  • 8 printable color handouts illustrate every step of the weaving project with instructions on how to create each design. Extremely helpful when a student has been absent or is falling behind.
  • Photo examples of the woven patterns and final project also are included.
  • Weaving vocabulary and definitions.
  • BONUS ITEM: "32 African-style Patterns" printable to use on any African-themed project you might need pattern resources for in the future.

⭐The weaving usually takes about 8-10 days. If a student finishes early I show them how to make Japanese Kumihimo braids with yarn using a paper plate loom! My students LOVE this time filler.
