Description
Are you looking for interactive and engaging morphology activities for your 4th and 5th grade students? Morphology word sorts are a great hands-on way to improve your students’ morphological awareness skills.
The morphology sorts included in this resource vary from simple (identifying if a word has a prefix or a suffix) to more advanced (determining what part of speech a word is based on a suffix).
About the Morphology Word Sorts
There are 60 sorts in all (52 closed sorts with given categories and 8 open sorts where students determine the categories).
Use the morphology sorts throughout the year as you teach different morphology skills to your students.
In addition to sorting words, students can do other activities with their sorted words to increase their understanding of morphemes.
They can:
- Choose words to use in sentences.
- Choose a word to write synonyms and antonyms.
- Choose a word to write related words (words with the same prefixes, for example).
You can even use the word sorts to review and assess students' knowledge of different morphological skills. By having students complete a morphology sort as an assessment, you can quickly determine what skills they have mastered and which ones may still need some practice.
With these morphology word sorts, your students will soon be able to easily recognize, identify, and use morphemes. Give your students the opportunity to practice their morphological awareness skills in an engaging hands-on way!
About the Digital Sorts
Digital versions of each sort are also included. The content is the same, but they have been redesigned to work in Google Slides on a variety of devices.
The sorts are ready to assign in Google Slides. Want help assigning activities in Google Slides? Click here for a free guide!
Tips:
- Be sure your students are in edit mode (not present mode) in order to drag and drop the moveable pieces to sort into categories.
- Want a whole class activity? Project a sort to your interactive whiteboard and have students take turns sorting the moveable word cards to the sorting workspace.
Digital answer keys are included for simple checking!
For more information on the digital version and for digital access links, see pages 7-10 of the PDF.
