What educators are saying

I did this as a scoot around the room and the students did great! They were engaged, it was challenging enough for everyone. I liked that it really showed students how words are put together.
It was interesting to see how difficult students found these cards and how much work needs to be done to teach prefixes and suffixes

Description

Have you finished teaching prefixes, suffixes, bases/roots, and want an engaging activity to help students practice these skills in a different way? These “Unscramble the Morphemes” task cards are the perfect activity to push students’ thinking about morphemes (units of meaning in a word – prefixes, suffixes, bases, and roots).

About the Unscramble the Morpheme Task Cards

For this activity, students are presented with three morphemes (prefixes, suffixes, bases, or roots) that are scrambled up. The students’ task is to unscramble the morphemes to create a word.

Then, the students will take the word they created and “plug” it into a given sentence. This will help ensure their word is accurate AND provide a context to help students understand the meaning of the word.

There are 45 task cards. The first 25 task cards contain base words (along with the prefixes and suffixes), and the last 20 contain roots (along with the prefixes and suffixes).

Bases are free morphemes (able to stand on their own as a word) and are often easier for students. Roots can be more challenging. You can use the first 25 while you are teaching roots, and then you use the final 20 after students have mastered roots. Or you can simply use them in the given order to help scaffold students into words with roots (after they are comfortable unscrambling words with bases).
