Description

Do you need a way to continue working on your students’ ability to read and understand multisyllabic words in between your pacing guide and meeting the needs of your standards? If so, reading warmups are a great option.

Reading warmups allow you to target specific reading skills (such as multisyllabic words with a focus on morphology) that you may not have time for otherwise.

What is Morphology and Why is it Important?

Morphology is the study of meaningful word parts in a language. These include roots, bases, prefixes, and suffixes.

Studying morphology in a variety of ways provides students with a strategic approach to learning AND decoding new words.

About The Reading Warmups

This set of reading warmups has the students reading base word families. The base words start off easier and get more complicated. There are 30 base words included.

Example 1:

  • Base Word: help
  • List of Words: helping, helped, helper, helpless, helplessness, helpful, unhelpful

Example 2:

  • Base Word: communicate
  • List of Words: communicated, communicator, communication, miscommunication, overcommunicate, intercommunicate, excommunicate

The purpose of these reading warmups is to:

  • Practice reading fluency with similar word families
  • Potentially expose students to new words with similar bases as familiar words
  • Allow students to see how affixes can be added to create new words

Options for Use

Option 1:

  • Introduce and discuss the base word with the students. Have students find and underline the base word in each word on the list. Then have the students read each word. If time allows, you can discuss the meaning of each and practice using them in sentences.

Option 2:

  • Write the base word on the board. Instruct students to write it on their paper or dry erase board. Direct students to add a suffix based on the first word in the list. Ask students to read the word with the suffix. Ask students to change the suffix to create the next word on the list. Ask students to read the new word they created. Continue until all suffixes and prefixes have been used, creating all of the words on the list.

Option 3:

  • Cover up the base word with a sticky note. Have students read each word on the list. Allow students to find the base word every word has in common. (You may want them to underline it.) Students can write the base word they found on the sticky note. Direct students to uncover the word and see if they identified the correct base word.

Using the Reading Warmups

You can use these during a whole group instruction using the digital version. The digital version has the base word and the list of words. As an interactive element, students underline the base word in each listed word. You could have students take turns underlining the base in each word on an interactive whiteboard.

The printable reading warmups could be used as small group reading warmups.
