Description

Reading warmups are an excellent way to help students continue building their understanding and decoding of multisyllabic words. This set of reading warmup offers students’ morphology practice with a focus on creating new words using prefixes and suffixes.

What is Morphology and Why is it Important?

Morphology is the study of meaningful word parts in a language. These include roots, bases, prefixes, and suffixes.

Studying morphology in a variety of ways provides students with a strategic approach to learning AND decoding new words.

About The Reading Warmups

This set of reading warmups presents a base word to the students. The students must use the base word and different affixes to create words based on given meanings. The base words start off easier and get more complicated.

Example 1:

Base Word: play

  1. Add a suffix to change the meaning to someone who plays. Answer: player
  2. Add a prefix to change the meaning to play again. Answer: replay
  3. Add a suffix to change the meaning to show the base in the past tense. Answer: played

Example 2:

Base Word: locate

  1. Add a prefix to change the meaning to move from its proper location. Answer: dislocate
  2. Add a suffix to create an adverb that means to do something nearby. Answer: locally
  3. Add a suffix to change the meaning to a particular place. Answer: location

The purpose of these reading warmups is to:

  • Provide students practice with creating new words with given bases.
  • Review affixes and how they impact the meaning of words.

Using the Reading Warmups

You can use these during a whole group instruction using the digital version. The digital version includes the base word and the three directions for creating new words using the base. Editable text boxes are provided for students to type their new words into.

The printable reading warmups could be used as small group reading warmups.
