About the Morphology Word Chains
There are 25 morphology word chain printables included.
Word chains #1-10 have one root throughout the chain, while chains #11-25 use multiple roots. You may want to start with #1-10 before moving onto chains with multiple roots.
Each printable includes:
- the word chain task
- fill-in-the-blank sentences
Each word chain task starts with a root and guides students through a series of steps to create a chain of related words.
The steps may include:
- Adding affixes (prefixes and suffixes)
- Removing affixes
- Changing affixes
- Changing the root
After completing the word chain, students will then read fill-in-the-blank sentences and determine which words from the chain complete each sentence.
An Example Word Chain Step-by-Step:
- Start with the root in the box. struct
- Add the prefix con-. construct
- Add the suffix -ion. construction
- Change the prefix to de-. destruction
- Change the suffix to -ive. destructive
- Remove the prefix and change the suffix to -ure. structure
Then, students will use the words they created in the word chain to fill in blanks in six sentences.
To be successful with this morphology activity, students need to have these prerequisite skills:
- Identify prefixes and suffixes in multimorphemic words and be able to isolate them from the root
- Know the meaning of common prefixes and suffixes
- Identify the root in a multimorphemic word and be able to isolate it from the prefixes and suffixes
- Know the suffix spelling conventions
In addition to the printables, I have included the following teaching tools and extension activities:
- Posters (What is Morphology? and Spelling Rules with Suffixes)
- Creating a Word Chain Step-by-Step Guide (Teacher’s Guide and Student Printable)
- Discussion Questions
- Blank Word Chain Template (with tips for students creating their own)
