Description
Looking for a way to boost your 4th and 5th grade students' vocabulary and morphology skills? This "Morphology Word of the Day" resource is the perfect solution!
About the Morphology Word of the Day Resource
This morphology resource presents students with a new word each day, and challenges them to analyze the word's prefix, root, and suffix in order to understand its meaning.
Students will write the meaning of each word part, and then read the word in the context of a sentence to further clarify its meaning.
In the second version of the printable, students will also generate a list of related words that contain the same root or affixes.
There are 56 days/pages of morphology word practice. I recommend using this resource AFTER your students have received initial morphology instruction.
Examples of Words and Sentences:
- Word: transportable
- Sentence: Ethan had a hard time getting his model of the solar system from home to school because it wasn’t easily transportable.
- Word: construction
- Sentence: The construction site was stacked with lumber and steel beams that would soon be turned into a new middle school.
- Word: injector
- Sentence: One of Amador's favorite kitchen gadgets is an injector that lets you shoot flavoring into raw hamburger patties.
Benefits of Using this Resource
- Using this activity is a great way to get students thinking about and analyzing the morphology of words.
- It offers systematic practice that helps them become more comfortable with analyzing words, and comes with plenty of opportunity for discussion and review.
- It is a great way to build students' confidence in their ability to break down words and understand their meanings.
- It also encourages independent learning, as the resource is self-directed and consistent, meaning that students can practice at their own pace.
- This is an excellent way to offer intentional morphology practice on a regular basis, using a routine that is both engaging and educational.
About the Alternate Hands-On Version
The content from the printable worksheets is also available as hands-on cards.
Cards include: the word, each morpheme, the sentence containing the word, and the meaning of the word.
Use all of the components or a few to have students create each word from the morphemes, isolate morphemes and determine meanings, use context clues from the sentence to determine meaning, etc.
Examples are shown in the PDF for ways to use these.
About the Digital Versions
The content of each of the digital versions is exactly the same as the printable worksheets, but the activities have been redesigned to function best in Google Slides on a variety of devices.
Students must be in edit mode to complete the activities and use the editable text boxes and interactive elements.
More information about the digital versions can be found on pages 4-6 of the PDF.
