Description
Take your morphology instruction to the next level with morphology writing prompts that get your students using the target morphemes in their writing.
This set focuses on suffixes (a complete list of the suffixes is included at the end of the description).
About the Morphology Writing Prompts
To complete the morphology writing activities, students will read the prompt, study the focus word that contains the target suffix, and then write a response that uses the focus word and shows their understanding of it.
Each suffix has 3-9 prompts included for a total of 135 prompts in all.
They are presented in four ways:
- Full page printable worksheet with lined space for students to write
- Choice board with all prompts for that suffix (optional brainstorming/recording sheet included)
- 6 per page version to cut and paste into student notebooks
- Digital version with one prompt per slide and an editable text box
The resource includes a wide range of prompts to choose from. These prompts include fiction stories, narrative stories, opinion prompts, and more.
Each prompt is designed to help students develop their writing skills by using the focus word that contains the target suffix. By doing so, students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of the word and how it can be used in different contexts.
In addition to the prompts, each suffix has 1-5 modeled responses for students to read. This allows you to provide students with an example of a written response to match the included rubric. Use them with guided practice in your classroom, then assign another prompt, or include the modeled responses in an independent center to give students additional support.
Using the Morphology Writing Activities
The morphology writing prompts provide a flexible and versatile tool that helps you incorporate morphology instruction into your curriculum. The prompts can be used in a variety of ways to help students develop their writing skills and deepen their understanding of suffixes.
- Independent Practice: Use the prompts as a way to give students practice writing using the target suffix. Assign one prompt per day or week or allow students to choose the prompts they want to complete.
- Word Work Station or Center: The prompts can be included in a word work center or station. Students can work through the prompts at their own pace, writing responses that demonstrate their understanding of the focus word and the target suffix.
- Extension Activity: The prompts can be used as an extension activity for students who complete work early or are ready for a challenge. Students can choose a prompt to work on or be assigned a specific prompt.
- Collaborative Learning: Students can work in pairs or small groups to respond to the same prompt or each can have a different prompt. They can then share their responses with their partner or small group.
