Description

Make multiplying and dividing integers more fun with this engaging activity! In this activity students multiply and divide integers to solve the mystery! You'll love the quick and easy set-up; your students will love solving the case.

In this activity, students will solve 20 multiplication and division problems. Each answer is associated with a suspect, weapon, or location. Each answer eliminates one of these options. When they are finished, they will have one suspect, one weapon, and one location left and will have solved the mystery!

This item is customizable using Adobe Acrobat Reader! Using Adobe Acrobat, you can customize:

  1. The title of your mystery -- If you don't want to use the game model where the students investigate a murder, you can now change the setting to be anything you would like! Ideas that other teachers have used include a burglary, a case of mixed-up identity, what the teacher did last weekend... whatever you can imagine!
  2. The suspects, the weapons and the locations! Students enjoy seeing their teachers, administrators, rival schools, and local and national sports heroes included in their assignments.

Please note that the user is NOT able to edit the individual questions or answers.

This feature of the file may not function correctly in all PDF Readers, so please use Acrobat Reader to ensure best functionality.

This kit offers THREE ways to use this activity.

Use as a Scavenger Hunt: The download includes 23 full-color cards for you to print and hang around your room for a class activity. As students solve their problems, they look around the room for their answer to see what clue they should eliminate.

Use as an Individual Activity: The download also includes a version that has all of the necessary clue information so students can complete this activity outside of the classroom. This is perfect for students who were absent during the class activity.

Use as a Digital Activity. Using Google Slides, students will drag and drop their answers to the questions. You can customize your title and characters in the digital version just like in the print versions.

In all three versions, the activity contains 20 questions.

Each answer is associated with either a suspect, a weapon or a location. When a student gets the answer, that option is eliminated from the mystery. When they are finished, students will only have one suspect, one weapon and location left, and they will have solved the mystery!

Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division and of fractions to multiply and divide rational numbers.
Understand that multiplication is extended from fractions to rational numbers by requiring that operations continue to satisfy the properties of operations, particularly the distributive property, leading to products such as (–1)(–1) = 1 and the rules for multiplying signed numbers. Interpret products of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.
Understand that integers can be divided, provided that the divisor is not zero, and every quotient of integers (with non-zero divisor) is a rational number. If 𝘱 and 𝘲 are integers, then –(𝘱/𝘲) = (–𝘱)/𝘲 = 𝘱/(–𝘲). Interpret quotients of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.
Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide rational numbers.
