What educators are saying

I used this resource in a unit on analyzing poetry where we focused on the lyrics of modern songs. My students LOVED this and it was highly engaging! Will definitely use again!
I have used this several times with my students and they love it! They even got me to use a couple of songs off of my play list and they loved them too! It was a great way to connect with my kids!

Description

This resource can be used with ANY SONG and is great for a review or test prep!

No doubt students love music. As teachers, we know one of the best

ways to engage students in learning is teach with their interests in mind.

Music offers an engaging and exciting way to cover many Common Core

Standards. What makes this resource stand out is that it can be used

with ANY SONG! This gives you the choice to use one that your students

are currently enjoying or one that you enjoy yourself.

Students are asked to:

1.Find the Theme and Main Idea of the song. They are placed side-by-

side on the graphic organizer so that students can compare.

2. Figurative Language. Most songs utilize some figurative language.

Students find the figurative language and write the line and tell what

type of figurative language was utilized.

3. Text Connections. The reason why songs become successful is because

they resonate with us. Students are asked to think of how the song

applies to their own life.

4. Parts of Speech. Students need to find a noun, verb, etc. in the song.

Even though we go over what a verb, adjective, adverb, etc. is it seems

that my kids can never get enough practice.

5. Tone and Mood. Again the tone and mood that is created with the song

is why many songs are so successful.

6. Point of View Identification.

Visualize. Students can sketch a quick picture (or more elaborate) of

what they see when they hear the song.

8. Author's Purpose. Cite evidence to describe why a student thinks the song was created/ written.

9. Favorite Lyric. Which line stands out the most to students?

Different heading titles: Music Analysis; Music Mondays; Tune Tuesdays; Festival Fridays to bring engagement into your classroom. You can make this a weekly review or whenever it fits your class needs.
