Music Teacher's Guide to Starting your Year on the Right Track {August-December/First Semester Planning)

Every music teacher wants to get their year started off on the right track, reviewing where they left off with each grade level and getting new students caught up to speed. From there we hope to stay on track progressing through the musical concepts we have planned for that grade level. During my first semester, I am also planning around a fall or Christmas program for my 3-5th grades.

What’s included:

Long Range Aug.-Dec. Plans: This set includes an editable 1st semester plan template (Aug. through Dec.) for grades K through 5. Everything is all in one excel file. Simply click on the different sheets on the bottom to take you to the next grade levels. I have filled out all the grade levels according to the sequence I follow, but if your kids are not to these concepts, don’t worry. You start where your kids are at and go from there. Make it fit your kids, your school, your needs. Everyone’s situation is different and this should in no way be considered the end all be all, but a template for you to adjust.

Grade Level Song Lists: I have included completed song lists by concept for grades K - 5. You might think about making additional categories to fit your needs, or adjusting the concepts to fit where your students are. You could add seasonal, holiday, and program music to your lists.

Once you have your semester plans completed to suit your needs, go to your song lists for each grade level to find the repertoire to teach those concepts on your monthly overview plans.I have included an editable completed song list for each grade level with suggested concepts for each grade level.

Once you have you song lists, it makes lesson planning much easier! Just look at where you are in your long term planning to see what rhythmic and melodic concepts you want to prepare/present/practice, then head to the song lists to find the repertoire you want for your lesson plans.

PLEASE NOTE- This set does not include individual lesson plans or completed concept plans. It is a starting place so that you can take it and make it your own for your classroom. I truly believe that lesson plans should be so personal to the teacher and the students. Take these ideas and find out how they work for you to keep you organized and on track!

My plans are based off the Kodaly Method of teaching, so the song lists and concept plans are geared towards preparing, presenting, and practicing concepts in a developmentally appropriate order. They will best be utilized by teachers who have had Kodaly certification or who are interested in implementing it in their teaching.
