Description

Imagine your seventh-graders as producers of the next hit music video... and it's all about number sense! This engaging project gives students hands-on experience with adding, subtracting, multiplying and diving positive and negative decimals in an authentic, need-to-know context that will prepare them for algebra. Musical, logical/mathematical, verbal/linguistic, bodily/kinesthetic, visual/spatial, and interpersonal intelligences are all challenged stretched, and there's a way for every student to shine. This project is designed for project-based learning or as an anchor project in a differentiated classroom, but it can easily be adapted to fit your class and the needs of your students.

COMMON CORE STANDARDS ADDRESSED: 7.NS.A.1, 2, 3

INCLUDED:

*Project description and an editable rubric (.docx)

*.WAV file and .MP3 file of the original song "That's the Additive Inverse" for students to use for music videos (or you may allow them to write their own using my song as inspiration)

*Lyrics for "That's the Additive Inverse" (.PDF)

*BONUS: A super short song to help remember multiplicative properties of identity and inverse called "Multiplicative Properties" (.WAV) plus lyrics (.PDF)

NOT INCLUDED: Tutorials on how to use various video editing platforms (beyond a screenshot of where to control the speed in Microsoft Movie Maker). There are so many options that this just wasn't practical to produce. If you need assistance with this, I would suggest looking up the software or app you plan to use on Youtube, or just playing around with it! You don't need a lot of technical experience to run this project successfully.

PLEASE NOTE: You will need access to iPads, Surfaces, or computers, video editing software and a few video cameras or smart phones for this project. Flash drives and headphones would also be helpful if students will be sharing spaces and/or devices.
