NYSESLAT Student-Friendly Speaking and Writing Rubric/Checklist

Prepare your ELL students for the NYSESLAT with these student-friendly Speaking and Writing rubric + checklist. These rubrics are created based on the actual NYS NYSESLAT Speaking and Writing scoring rubrics. I took the rubrics and changed the language to make it more student-friendly.

***Speaking would be appropriate for K-3 students, HOWEVER, since K writing rubric is completely different, K won't benefit from the Writing rubric as much.***

Speaking rubric follows the same 0-2 point system. I took the Entering level out of the rubric and included Emerging, Transitioning, Expanding and Commanding.

This will be a resource for you to use right before NYSESLAT, but will be more effective if you used it throughout the year in order for students to be familiar with the NYS NYSESLAT Scoring Rubric. I've created and used these with my ELLs since I wanted something comprehensive for my kiddies. If used appropriately and purposefully, this will support your students to be more reflective and independent speakers and writers. Happy Teaching!
