What educators are saying

Great social story to add to /supplement social skills curriculum and to help students who are struggling! Thank you!

Description

Do you have a student hitting or kicking others in your classroom and you are trying to find ways to stop it? You're not alone! Challenging behaviours such as hitting or kicking can be a common occurrence among children with special needs. Learning to treat others with kindness is an important social skill that all children should be taught. This adapted book is designed to help special needs children understand the concept of not hitting or kicking. Through pictures and simple language, children can learn that using safe hands is the best way to show respect for others. With the help of this adapted book, children can develop healthy social habits and build positive relationships with their peers.

To address hitting, kicking and other challenging behaviours, it's essential to take a proactive and positive approach that emphasizes understanding, patience, and support. I thought beginning with a Safe Hands & Feet social story / adapted book would be the perfect way to start developing an understanding of why hitting or kicking is not an appropriate form of communication.

Main idea of the safe feet and safe hands adapted book

  • Hitting = Sad friends and hurting
  • Safe hands = Happy friends and playtime!
  • Kicking = Sad friends and hurting
  • Safe feet = Happy friends and playtime!

I chose to make it a safe hands & feet adapted book because students can actively participate in reading the book even if they cannot verbally read yet.

When to read the spitting social story?

  • Immediately after a hitting or kicking episode
  • As a general class story time / discussion
  • As part of their work tasks, while the student is in a positive state (If they are already heightened, it is harder for them to comprehend the information)
