Norse Mythology Unit, Campbell Hero’s Journey, Lord of the Rings, Marvel Thor

In this epic Norse Mythology unit, you and your students will explore the realms (Asgard, Midgard, Jotunheim, etc.) and characters (Odin, Thor, Loki, etc.) of Norse Mythology and study Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey (monomyth). You will apply the Hero’s Journey to the Norse myths as well as Marvel’s Thor and connect the past with the present by comparing Norse myths to The Lord of the Rings and Marvel’s Thor. In other words, you’ll leave your ordinary world, enter a special world filled with giants, dwarfs, dragons, shape changers, kingdoms, and treasures, and return as a hero with a supreme knowledge of the Norse myths, Vikings, and the Hero’s Journey.

This unit is for high school and advanced middle school students.

Part 1: Hero’s Journey - Joseph Campbell

Introduction to terms and characteristics of heroes and the Hero’s Journey; includes Heroic Act worksheet, Hero’s Journey overview and template worksheet and keys, reading comprehension and discussion questions, YouTube link (What Makes a Hero), and an Easel self-checking activity

Part 2: Vikings

Frontloading / introduction to Vikings; includes text, worksheet with key, and map of Europe, reading comprehension and discussion questions, suggestion: Vikings, Season 1, Episode 2

Part 3: Norse Mythology Map Project

Creative group project where students create a map based on Norse myths (Project Based Learning approach); includes texts, group project instructions, group management, rubric checklist, soft skills handouts, and worksheet with key

Part 4: The Norse Ring Story, Lord of the Rings, and Hero’s Journey in Norse Mythology

Compare the Norse ring story to The Lord of the Rings and apply the Hero’s Journey to the story of the Norse hero Sigurd; compare Norse ring story to Lord of the Rings; includes texts and worksheets with keys, reading comprehension and discussion questions

Part 5: Thor Movie (Marvel)

Watch Thor and apply knowledge of realms and characters and analyze Thor’s Hero’s Journey; includes worksheet with key

Assessments:

a) Essay: Write about Norse Mythology, Hero’s Journey, and/or Vikings; includes prompts, handout, and printable essay planner

b) Unit Test: Multiple choice and short answers; test with keys (DOC file)

c) Easel Assessments: Self-grading multiple choice quizzes on The Creation (20 questions) and Ragnarok (20 questions)

• Assign to Students: Send to your students to complete on a device with one click.
• Deliver Timely Feedback. Once a student selects an answer, they’ll receive immediate feedback if their answer was correct or incorrect.
