What educators are saying

I'm using this resource to add to my 8th grade classroom decor. I have definitely "caught" students actually using it from time to time. Glad I have it available for them if they need it!
These were very helpful in creating a LARGE visual for my students struggling with positive and negative fractions and decimals.

Description

A tall vertical number line is an essential visual for helping students understand, compare, and operate with rational numbers.

This set includes 13 options for large vertical number lines. Once assembled, the numbers lines are 5.5 feet tall or 8.5 feet tall (depending on the option you choose). Some have integers, and others show increments for fractions and decimals. A blank open number is great for sketching and visualizing numbers for comparing and operating.

The options include number lines from -3 to 3, -5, to 5, and -20 to 20.

Number lines can help students in many math topics, including...

  • adding and subtracting positive & negative numbers
  • estimating values
  • locating fractions
  • finding absolute value
  • calculating distance
  • building number sense
  • and more!

Students who struggle with moving left and right on a horizontal number line often find success with the vertical arrangement. Moving up for positives and down for negatives makes more sense for many. I have seen tremendous improvement with adding and subtracting integers when students use a vertical number line.

Just print the sheets on regular 8.5 x 11 paper. Trim the edges, tape together, and laminate if possible. It only requires black ink. Choose any color paper you like.

Small printable number lines are also included. These can be printed as reference for students. Laminate and students can use dry erase markers to help them calculate.

Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, credits/debits, positive/negative electric charge); use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation.
Recognize opposite signs of numbers as indicating locations on opposite sides of 0 on the number line; recognize that the opposite of the opposite of a number is the number itself, e.g., -(-3) = 3, and that 0 is its own opposite.
Find and position integers and other rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram; find and position pairs of integers and other rational numbers on a coordinate plane.
Understand ordering and absolute value of rational numbers.
Write, interpret, and explain statements of order for rational numbers in real-world contexts. For example, write -3° 𝐶 > -7° 𝐶 to express the fact that -3° 𝐶 is warmer than -7° 𝐶.
