Expository Writing Unit – 10 Days and 52 pages
In this 10-day, Common Core - aligned Expository Writing Unit, students will demonstrate a deep understanding of the features, critical elements, and purpose of expository or informative writing. During the unit, students will write an expository news story about a historic event. Through instruction on the news story structure and investigations of sample news stories, students will understand the critical components of a news story so that they can write their own informational news article.

Figurative Language Unit – 5 Days and 60 pages
Studying figurative language makes students better readers and writers! In this unit students will define, interpret, write, read, and analyze six types of figurative language: simile, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia, alliteration, and hyperbole.
Each lesson includes guided instruction, independent writing practice, independent reading practice (with two reading passages for each lesson), and a super fun and engaging figurative language activity. Speaking of engaging activities, in this unit students will be writing alliteration stories, creating wacky and original similes and metaphors, personifying an object with a character sketch and diary entry, drawing onomatopoeia filled comics, and working in small groups to play hyperbole-bonanza. At the end of this unit, students will be able to better understand, write, read and interpret figurative language.
In this unit students will:
- Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meaning
- Use context as a clue to the meaning of a words or phrase
- Explain the meaning and note effectiveness of similes, metaphors, hyperbole, personification, alliteration, and onomatopoeia
- Interpret figures of speech

Finding the Main Idea – 3 Days and 48 pages
This mini-unit provides numerous opportunities to develop the skill of finding the main idea. Each lesson starts with a fun and engaging activity - Tri-Bond Centers, Building a Main Idea House, and a Cooperative Main Idea Paragraph Activity. 20 This or That Daily ELA Warm-Ups - Everyday – 57 pages
This is SET TWO of the very popular This or That Daily Warm Ups.
Starting each class with a warm up has been a huge success in my classroom...and my students love these This or That Warm Up activities!
This resource includes 20 more This or That Warm Ups with a total of 40 activities that review critical ELA skills. Each This or That Warm Up includes instruction (at the top of the worksheet) and then 2 choices for students to showcase their learning. After reviewing each choice, students can choose to do the “This” activity or the “That” activity. The choices promote engagement and tap into multiple learning styles. All 20 of the This or That Warm Ups can be taught sequentially or used throughout the year. The warm ups are an awesome way to start each class. They typically take between 5-10 minutes, and often lead to great mini-lessons and discussions.
Four tracking and grading options are included in this resource so that you can use the method that works best in your classroom. Also, you’ll find tips and ideas for implementing the warm ups into your instruction and teacher keys for each warm up.
