The entire unit revolves around the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, as students explore how these rights are protected or violated in Canada and in the global community.

Teachers are able to teach ONE lesson to both grades, using an inquiry approach. Both grades examine how governments, organizations, and individuals are active participants who deal with important issues.

Students and teachers learn together about

• the issues surrounding the Syrian Refugee Crisis.

• how the Canadian government and NGOs deal with these issues on the global stage (meeting Grade 6 expectations).

• how federal, provincial/territorial, and municipal governments, groups, and individual citizens work together to help the Syrian refugees who have come to settle in Canada (Grade 5 expectations).

Students then form Expert Groups to examine other issues. Both Grade 5 and Grade 6 students look at the overall themes of

a) Education

b) Clean Water

c) Disaster Response

However, Grade 5 students explore how Canada and Canadians respond to the topic within Canada (ie. First Nations Water Issues) while the Grade 6 students explore the same topic internationally (ie. Clean Water for Haiti).

There are 10 inquiry issues covered in this resource, including the most recent, Human Rights and the Holocaust, addressing topics relevant to the 2023 curriculum.

You will require:

❶ Access to the internet

❷ A Google Drive Account

Can I edit this resource?

Only the digital version of these units can be edited. I have left 95% of the texts in editable form for two reasons:

➀ to ensure that students are able to use Google Read & Write with the activities.

➁ to allow teachers to edit texts and tasks when they feel it suitable for their class or to address IEP accommodations for specific students.

How do I collect digital student work ?

Your students will simply complete their own copies of the lessons, and turn it into your platform (ie. Google Classroom).
