K-1 WRITING UNIT 5: MY OPINION

"I like ______ more than ______ because..."

"In my opinion..."

This unit will teach your students how to write about their opinions and give supporting details.

Activities provide scaffolding so your students can be confident and successful writers. I've made it so easy to differentiate your lessons!

Included are activities suitable for whole group instruction, small groups, writing stations and independent work.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "This resource has been amazing! It truly helped my scholars understand what an opinion is and helped them begin to give their thoughts about an opinion."

--- WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THIS UNIT? ---

Opinion Posters

  • 8.5x11 PDF - print on paper or card stock
  • 16x20 JPG - upload to a photo center to use as large posters

Vocabulary Cards

  • These key words help students understand how to state their opinion.
  • You can place these in your writing center along with the posters.

Which do you prefer?

These simple activities introduce students to what an opinion is.

3 different activities:

  • Which is better? (circle your answer)
  • Which do you prefer (finish the sentence using the word bank)
  • I like _____ more than _______ (fill in the sentence using the provided answers)

Each activity gets slightly more difficult as students become more comfortable with writing about their opinion.

Which one do you like more?

  • Students choose between foods and/or activities to decide which one they like more.
  • Next, they must support their opinion with words from the word bank: "I like my _______ more because____________________."
  • Students can repeat this activity with 10 different prompts. Their confidence and understanding of how to give their opinion grows each time they complete a writing prompt.
  • Update: these activities now come with and without sentence starters.

Supporting Details

  • These one page worksheets are the perfect way for students to learn what supporting details are.
  • We are focusing on learning how to use the word because to then give supporting reasons for their opinion sentences.
  • Students are given an option sentence. Example: Alligators are the scariest animal.
  • Students are prompted to give two details to support that opinion.
  • Finally, students write a complete sentence using an opinion, the word because and supporting details.
  • Differentiated options are included so all students can be successful with this activity.

Getting Organized

  • Students learn how to organize their ideas into sentences.
  • We learn to write a topic/opinion sentence, and then add additional sentences that are supporting details.
  • Multiple activities, lessons, posters and graphic organizers are included to teach this skill.

In My Opinion Writing Prompts

  • Students choose a prompt from this chart to write about.
  • Coordinating graphic organizers and writing papers are included so students can provide reasons and details to support their opinion.

The Best Things - Holidays + Seasons

  • Six holidays and four season are included for students to write about. This activity can be used throughout the school year to practice opinion writing.
  • Word banks provide students with the scaffolding they need to complete the sentence starters: "The best things about __________ are...."
  • Themes include: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring.

The Best Snack, Pet, + Game

  • I use this activity towards the end of the unit once students feel more confident about writing their opinion and giving supporting details.
  • Students choose an item they think is best and then give reasons why this is their opinion.
  • Supporting vocabulary is given for each picture to assist students with writing details.

Opinion Rubric + Additional Practice

  • Using a writing rubric helps students remember what needs to be included in their opinion paper.
  • Multiple versions of writing paper are included for students to write about their opinion.
  • These writing papers come with and without sentence starters, vocabulary word banks, graphic organizers and more differentiated options.
