What educators are saying

From year to year, I struggle with how to best teach Shakespeare in a way that does not bore the students (or me) to tears. This year, I feel more confident because of this resource that allows students to grapple with the text as well as complex analysis. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I might dicide to use this at a later date, but it did not fit into my plans for this year. I do so much love it though. I love all the EQs. I am organizing this to try to use next year.

    Description

If you're overwhelmed with ideas or intimidated to jump into Shakespeare's play Othello, this set of lessons will ensure the critical thinking that students need to tackle the play with confidence. This series of lessons focuses on important close reading passages to be used alongside the study of any version of the play that you are watching in class. Ditch the "read the entire play" mentality and watch it! Use these activities and close reads to focus students on what's most important by focusing on an Essential Question that matters to them.

    THE ESSENTIAL QUESTION:

In this unit, students will examine the question: What happens when the villain wins? From the pre-reading to the summative assessment, students will use this question to guide them through the text and other supplementals.

    CLOSE READING:

The primary strategy employed by this unit is close reading. Students will watch - close read - watch - close read. There are not study guide questions. Students are not expected to read the play on their own. The critical thinking work is done in 2-3 close reads per week that are all selected especially for their importance to the plot, but more importantly, the way that they help students understand a deeper and deeper level of their response to the essential question over time.

    EVIDENCE TRACKING:

Over the course of the play, students will use their evidence trackers to keep tabs on the evolution of their responses to the Essential Question. This tool is highly versatile and can be used as a check-in at the start or end of class, at the completion of watching an Act or Scene, or in small groups or partners periodically throughout the unit.

    FILM NOTES:

As students watch the play, you are encouraged to pause and discuss the tone of a speaker, the gestures and body language of the actors, a critical line that has been shared, etc. This unit contains a film notes sheet that students will use every single time the film is playing so that they can keep running notes about characters, plot, tension, and more.

TACKLING SHAKESPEARE IN THE MODERN CLASSROOM
