What educators are saying

This is a very well-written book about the details of 9/11 from the perspective of one of our K-9 officers. Thank you for sharing!
Most of my students have never heard of 9/11. This resource helps to put the tragedy on their level. They can connect with the dog in the story.

Description

From educator/author Hank Fellows: This 32 page children's book, with 25 child-friendly photos, is an ideal introduction to the facts and themes surrounding the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. This is the true story of "Sirius," the police patrol dog who died in the Twin Towers on 9-11-01. The story is told by "Sirius" in his own words, and also recounts his friendship with his police officer partner, David, who survived the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks. This book is currently being used in New Jersey's state-wide 9/11 Education curriculum for grades 3-8. On Sept. 10, 2006, Hank Fellows received a Citation from the New York City Council for his "continued generosity and devotion to the remembrance of September 11th." As a September 11th teaching resource, this book is ideal not only for Patriot Day (9/11), but also for Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, July 4th, and the study of 9/11/01 in American History classes.

Free lesson plans for "Sirius, The Hero Dog of 9/11" for use with Grades 3-5, 4-6, and 6-8 are available right on my Products Page.

SAMPLE INTRO OF THIS BOOK TO YOUR CLASS: "Do any of you know the holiday that's coming up in a few days on Sept. 11th? It's called "Patriot Day," and it marks the date Sept. 11, 2001. Now, that date is how many years before you were born? Does anyone know what happened on Sept. 11, 2001, which is also known as 9/11? We're going to read a book now that explains what happened on that date. And do you know what makes this book special? The story is told by a dog named "Sirius" [Seer-us]. Are you all ready now to read this book?"
