What educators are saying

I used this resource to help students who were struggling with missing skills. They were really engaged when working on the ones that they needed to focus on. It saved me a lot of time in trying to find individual lessons on the phonics reviewed.
These are great. My students have really enjoyed them and are starting to close those gaps. Thank you for such a great resource that is age appropriate for upper elementary students.

    Description

s***This GROWING bundle has been completed on 3/30/2023. If you purchased before this date, download the remaining sets!***

Finding phonics resources and activities for upper elementary students can be a challenge. These phonics task cards are designed specifically for fourth and fifth graders who have gaps in their phonics knowledge and need a more ”mature” way to practice.

The task cards provide an effective means of reviewing and reinforcing basic phonics skills in both grade level and below words. The content and presentation of the cards are carefully crafted to be appropriate for fourth and fifth graders.

    About the Phonics Task Cards

There are 16 task cards in each set. Each task card includes the following:

    • A carefully written sentence that includes 2-3 words with the focus phonics pattern(s)
    • A question that allows students to show their understanding of the sentence

    Example Sentences and Questions:

    • For their livelihood, raccoons look for food in trashcans in neighborhoods.
      • Why do the raccoons look for food?

    • Since it was a gloomy afternoon, I took a nap in my bedroom.
      • Why did the speaker take a nap?

    • The teacher put pillows and books to read in a nook in the classroom’s corner.
      • Where was the book nook?

Also included is a teaching poster and phonics notes for teachers for each target sound.

    About the Digital Phonics Activities

The task cards are also available digitally, ready to assign in Google Slides. The content is exactly the same as the printable version, but has been reformatted for optimal digital use on a variety of devices.

    Two digital versions are included:

    1. Each slide includes the sentence, the question, and moveable circles to identify words with the target sound. (Best for whole group and verbal discussion of question.)
    2. Each slide includes the sentence, the question, moveable circles to identify words with the target sound, and an editable text box. (Best for independent practice since students can type their answers in the text boxes given.)

You can use these phonics skills task cards for:

    • small group instruction
    • independent practice (use the word list to preview the words beforehand, if needed)
    • whole group warmups using the digital slides

A Note About Using All of the Sets

Since upper elementary students have already been taught (or should have been) all of these phonics patterns, there is not a specific order that is absolutely necessary to follow.

You can mix and match them based on the needs you see in your students' decoding abilities.

However, if you want to use all of them just in case or because you are not confident they have been taught, I suggest using them in the order they are listed above.

The vowel teams can be taught in any order, but I do recommend starting with the long vowel teams first. Also, the long vowel review can take place before or after r-controlled vowels.

    Bonus Bundle-Only Exclusive!

    • As a bundle bonus file, I have included cover images for each set that can be used for organization and labeling purchases.
