What educators are saying

I used this activity with my students and it was a good time saver / filler. It allowed students to assess their own understanding of the difference between the properties.
My students really enjoyed this packet. We had a lot of good discussion on the vocabulary words and my students are eager to do the sorting activity in a few days! Thank you for sharing!

Description

For this Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter Cut and Paste activity, students match 18 pictures representing the properties of matter with their respective definitions (this is in three groups of six so that it's not too overwhelming). Then, they write the definitions for a physical and chemical property and sort the properties into the category that they believe they each belong.

Once the students have made their guesses, have the students cut out the property pictures and lead a class discussion to correctly sort the properties. Finally, students make their own simple graphic organizer of the physical and chemical properties of matter.

This is a quick but good introduction to studying the properties of matter because students use prior knowledge, and the product is simple and visual for students to study.

Now includes a digital Google Slides version that you can assign through Google Classroom!

Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred. Examples of reactions could include burning sugar or steel wool, fat reacting with sodium hydroxide, and mixing zinc with hydrogen chloride. Assessment is limited to analysis of the following properties: density, melting point, boiling point, solubility, flammability, and odor.
