What educators are saying

I used this as a fun way to wrap up our unit on polar animals. I did modify some of the writing portions for my kindergartners, but they had a blast with this experiment especially making the blubber glove.
Used this while learning about animal adaptations. Students LOVED doing this science experiment with "blubber" and ice water.

Description

In this experiment, students will explore how polar bears are able to stay warm in cold climates. They will follow the scientific method to discover how blubber helps a polar bear stay warm. As students' test their hypothesis, they will quickly discover that the thermometer reads a warmer temperature in the ice water with shortening fat (Crisco). This super easy and minimal prep science experiment takes no longer than one class period and costs close to $0! To help guide your instruction and planning, an answer key and teacher tip page are included to support your teaching!
