Pre-Reading Strategies for ANY content area, novel, or textbook

This packet contains activities that will set students up for success before reading in any content area. Designed to scaffold reading comprehension of higher-level texts for all students, this packet contains multiple strategies and graphic organizers.

Content area teachers often find that they need to teach reading due to the complex nature of texts in their fields. Students who struggle with reading in English will certainly struggle with reading a textbook in science, social studies, and math.

Research shows that effective reading instruction follows a B-D-A approach: teachers should use strategies before,during, and after reading in order to scaffold instruction and help students get through texts at their instructional reading level and above.

This packet contains strategies to use before reading. They are also known as pre-reading strategies or anticipation strategies.

Using these strategies will help strengthen comprehension by activating schema (prior knowledge) and helping students focus on important features of the text.
