Description

Primary Music Long Range Plans for the Ontario Curriculum

Teaching music for the first time and don't know how to organize your year? This is a handy one-page reference page for each of the primary grades for music. Each one-page long-range plan for grades 1, 2, and 3 includes tips for use and footnotes.

Across the top of the table are the curriculum expectations. These are taken directly from the Ontario Curriculum, but will likely match very well with expectations from other provinces / countries. All expectations are split into four categories: Beat & Rhythm; Pitch, Texture & Harmony; Timbre & Form; and Expression & Performance. For each category, there are suggestions for:

  • Concept Introduction – how to introduce the musical element
  • Multiple Intelligence Activities – ways of expanding on understanding through movement, visual expression, etc
  • Dictation Assessment – evaluate a student’s auditory understanding of the concept (ability to identify or describe what was heard)
  • Composition Assessment – evaluate a student’s ability to use the musical element creatively in a composition
  • Performance Assessment – evaluate a student’s ability to sing or play examples of the concept

The last row of the table for each grade contains a list of suggested pieces of music that are good examples of each concept and are appropriate for that particular grade.

Some of the activities referenced in these long range plans are things I have developed in my classroom and require additional explanation – these instructions are included in the footnotes. There are also some activities that I have gleaned from other sources – these have a web address in the footnotes.
