Description

These nonfiction reading passages are perfect for the month of November and the Thanksgiving season. Each passage is engaging and includes informational facts about Native Americans, The Lakota of the Great Plains, The Wampanoag Tribe, and Pilgrims.

These passages and comprehension questions require students to PROVE IT! They must go back to the text to support their answers with EVIDENCE.

These passages can be used for many purposes: close reading, a quick assessment, targeted small groups, whole class instruction, the possibilities are endless.

In my own classroom I typically use these passages during my guided reading instruction. I have also used them as a quick assessment. During the first reading, I have my students number the paragraphs or subheadings (If the passage includes paragraphs or subheadings.) During the second reading my students take notes directly on the text. They make inferences, draw conclusions, circle vocabulary, etc. As my students complete the comprehension activities, I ALWAYS require them to underline, circle, or highlight the evidence in the text.

*Each passages includes a writing response. This is perfect to have students summarize the passage and draw a picture.

I hope your students enjoy these activities as much as mine do!
