What is it?
This Respond to Invention (RTI) comprehension review resource was designed for upper elementary ELA teachers in 4th, 5th, and 6th grade. As an upper elementary teacher for over 11 years, I found that finding quality, rigorous resources that meet the standards are hard to find.
Hence, this resource now exists. It’s perfect for your classroom and can be used in many ways to meet the needs of all of your students.
Why do I need it?
Many times, students are unsure of how to master a standard, and as a teacher, you need to figure out what is missing for that student to master the standard.
I created this resource using a Three Stepped Approach, keeping in mind the 3 Tiered RTI system. Since our students range from way below grade level, on grade level, and above grade level in our classrooms, we have to have resources that meet them where they are, provide grade level rigor, and prepare them to master the standards, all while scaffolding their learning.
That’s a lot to do for one person, every single day.
I have created this resource with you in mind because I’ve been in your shoes for many, many years.

How do I use it?
Each Common Core Reading: Informational Text and Reading Literature Standard is addressed in this RTI resource for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students. This resource includes 57 ready-to-print RTI tiered, laser-focused resources.
I carefully studied the CCSS for years as an ELA teacher, and have desegregated the standards many times to make sure I was teaching what the students needed, using resources that aligned with the standards, and providing resources that scaffolded their learning along the way.
In this RTI Resource, there is a Three Stepped Approach for using the activities included. The activities are not color coded, but I have color coded the directions below to make it clearer in how to choose which activity to use with which student.
Step 1: These are the students who would say to you, “I do not get this at all.” Step 1 includes visuals and a very simple breakdown for introducing and reteaching the standard for students who struggle with inferential and literal comprehension. Step 1 often reteaches the key elements of the skill they should already know, but might have missed those critical elements. I would use Step 1 with students identified as Tier 3 for RTI.
Step 2: These are the students who would say to you, “I kinda get it, but can you explain how this works a little bit more?” Step 2 includes smaller passages, with a mix of “right there” and text based evidence questions. Students will have to find evidence to support their thinking. Students do a lot of thinking about why and how the skill is developed in Step 2 activities. I would use Step 2 with students identified as Tier 2 for RTI.
Step 3: These are the students who would say to you, “I’ve almost mastered this standard, but maybe just a little one-on-one would be beneficial.” Step 3 includes longer texts, with richer vocabulary. It’s “on-level” and most mimics the types of texts students would see on a state test. It asks students to think inferentially and critically. They have to think about the analysis of the text and the connections between the details. This would be a great “push” for students that need an academic challenge. I would use Step 3 with students identified as Tier 2 for RTI, or for students that just need that little extra reinforcement for a particular skill.
