ABOUT THE READING SKILL INTERVENTION RESOURCE
The texts included in this resource are written at a 2nd/3rd grade reading level but provide practice in grade level skills for 4th and 5th grade.
Engaging Topics for Upper Elementary: The texts are written with appropriate topics for upper elementary students. (Note: These are still "parent appropriate" topics and contexts. They are definitely more engaging than reading most texts meant for 2nd graders, but they are still school-appropriate.)

ABOUT THE LESSON PLANS
Pre-Reading Skill Review: Each lesson includes the skill review presented in different ways and with varying language. This will allow you to present the skill a bit differently with each lesson. Here are two ideas for using this section:
- Read the script beforehand and use it like a conversation with your students.
- Use the content to help you create anchor charts for during the lesson and future reference.
Introduce the Story and Vocabulary: These are optional and can be skipped but are perfect for improving comprehension and making the stories accessible to students.
Student Focus for Reading: Give students the focus for reading. This focus ties directly back to the skill focus.
Optional Comprehension Check: I recommend using this for a verbal discussion of the text. Provide sentence stems as needed to support the students in answering the questions (use the answer key to help generate the sentence stems).
Post-Reading Skill Discussion: These questions focus directly on the skill being practiced. Have the students highlight or underline text evidence to support their answers. After discussing and finding evidence to support, then have the students record their answers. Provide sentence stems as needed to support the students in answering the questions (use the answer key to help generate the sentence stems).
ABOUT THE STUDENT PASSAGE AND QUESTIONS PRINTABLES
There are two options of student passage printables are included. Use which one works best for you and your students.
Option 1: Text passage only
- Use this version to allow students to focus on the text.
- This allows you to choose the questions to ask and the vocabulary to frontload (if any).
- Comprehension and skill questions are on a separate page following the text.
Option 2: Text passage with sidebar for overview of vocabulary, skill, and comprehension
- Use this version for students to review vocabulary words, read the text, and answer skill-related and comprehension questions.
- For this version, students will need to use the back of the paper or a piece of notebook paper to record the answers to the questions.
ABOUT THE DIGITAL VERSIONS
***As of December 2023, the digital version has been completely redesigned and optimized for use in Google Slides on a variety of devices.***
The content is the same as the printable version of the resource.
However, it only includes the student content, so you will need to use the printable lesson plans AND answer keys from the PDF.

Google Slides Version with No Audio
- Ready to assign in Google Classroom, this version includes multiple slides for each set.
- 1-slide passage
- Comprehension questions with text boxes
- Skill-based questions with text boxes
Google Slides with Audio Version
- This version includes the same content and organization as the Google Slides version, but with an audio component.
- There is a “Click to Listen” button in the top right corner.
- When you click it, it will open a webpage in a new tab. The webpage has the audio and the passage so you can listen and follow along.
- When you are finished listening, simply close the tab and return to the Google Slides file to answer the comprehension and skill-based questions.
