Vocabulary & Comprehension Packet:
The student work for every 2-3 chapter section of the novel contains both vocabulary and comprehension questions based on the reading. Each section includes:
- Vocabulary Chart: For each section of the novel, students will have 4 vocabulary terms based on the reading and will have to discover their own “bonus word” from the 2-3 chapters. Students will infer the meaning of the word based on the text, and then look up the dictionary definition. They will build on skills using context clues in text, gain dictionary practice and build on overall vocabulary.
- Comprehension Check: For each section of the novel, 4-5 short answer questions are provided on the 2-3 chapters. These questions include factual, inference, prediction, point-of-view, summarization and cause and effect questions.
- Get Connected!: For each section of the novel, students will be asked a Text-to-Self, Text-to-Text or Text-to-World question related to the chapters. This will help students develop a habit of making connections as they read, to access prior knowledge and build on understanding.
- WOW Quotes: A quote has been chosen from each section of the novel for students to analyze. These quotes include figurative language such as imagery, idioms, hyperboles, similes and metaphors, and descriptive language to create emotion in readers. Students will build on their writing style and ability to write descriptively while analyzing another author’s work.
- Spotlight Character: For each section of the novel students will be asked to analyze a different character. Students will focus on character development, character traits, and character relationships.
Focus Assignments:
The student focus assignments for every 2-3 chapter section of the novel will include a different standard focus per section. Topics include:
- Prediction: Students will make predictions based on clues in the text and explain their reasoning.
- Setting: Students will map out a setting from the novel based on descriptions from narrator and their own inferences.
- Visualization: Students will choose one scene from the novel and draw a picture of their visualization. They will explain what “5 senses” descriptions were used to visualize.
- Point of View: Students will compare and contrast the point of view of two different characters on the same situation.
- Main Events: Students will draw 3 pictures of the 3 main events of the week’s chapters, and write a brief description of the events using transitions.
- Summarization: Students will create a comic strip to summarize the events of the story thus far.
- Perspective: Students will choose a character and write a diary entry from the characters perspective.
- Figurative Language: Students will learn about metaphors and similes and differentiate between these two forms of figurative language.
- Character Development: Students will analyze main character, Chase, and compare his character traits and actions before and after his accident.
- Character Analysis: Students will analyze 4 characters from the novel and create a Year Book based on their visualizations of the characters and their traits.
- Plot: Students will create a Plot Diagram to outline the setting, characters, rising action, climax, falling action and conclusion of the novel.
Culminating Task Choice Board:
