What educators are saying

It was thorough and direct yet still engaging. Used for whole-class and can't complain. Helped me out and allowed students to spiral through continue use of practice. Thank you!
This was a great way to introduce the different transformations for my students in a hands-on way. It kept them engaged.

    Description

Here's what you need to teach rigid transformations! With these 3 introductory activities, your students will discover the effects of translations, rotations, and reflections on two-dimensional figures using coordinates!

In this bundle, you will receive:

    • a hands-on translations activity where students will cut out a figure and PHYSICALLY SLIDE it a given number of units on a coordinate plane, then record the coordinates in a table, and look for the effects each translation has made. Students are asked to summarize what they noticed and make predictions about coordinates of different translations.
    • a hands-on rotations activity where students PHYSICALLY TURN a coordinate plane using a "rotations mat" and then record the new coordinates of a figure using an activity sheet with tables. They use what they record to determine the effects the transformation has on the coordinates of the vertices.
    • an introductory reflections activity where students reflect 4 different figures across the x-axis or y-axis and record the coordinates of the reflected image in a table. They then notice the effects of the coordinates when the figure is reflected across a particular axis. Make this activity hands-on by using tracing paper and flipping it rather than counting.

These simple activities are highly engaging and have students learning rigid transformation rules through inquiry. Students make observations and can then test their hypotheses.
