This is one of my favorite units to teach my freshman! For the first few acts, I have them listen to the recorded version of the play, as we read along in class. I will pause after certain scenes to help "translate" into modern terms. As the unit goes on, I will ask students to attempt to "translate" what they believe is going on, and will have them continue to answer the guided reading questions, along with "DJs" or dialectical journals.
I usually give the "Into Shakespeare" Prezi at the beginning of the unit. This can be accessed publicly on prezi.com and can be found under its title.
I have them complete a character map, as students will get confused as to which character is a Montague or a Capulet. This also gives them a creative avenue to express their understanding of the characters. I tell them as far as characters, they can use their own drawings, or celebrities, Disney characters, even pictures of their own friends to make it fun and creative.
For the PBL Prequel, I ask students to research, then invent the feud that caused the hatred between the families. I then ask students to look into parallels of conflict today, and how conflict is caused, and hopefully resolved.
Finally, I have my students perform a dialogue from the play itself. I've also had students reenact a scene from the play itself.
Enjoy!
