Description

If you are like me, you are frustrated with the lack of samples of the new extended constructed response prompts we have to go off of per grade level in ELA in preparation for the revised STAAR test starting April of 2023.

My thought in creating this resource was to empower you to create your own prompts in the same style/wording as the new ECR prompts so that you can tailor them to whatever you are reading in class, since the prompts must be tied to literature now.

We all read a variety of literature, though.  To try to give a one-size-fits-all prompt not knowing the specific literature it will be applied to is a likely impossible task.  What I’ve provided here should be taken as fluid templates that you are welcome to build upon/adapt to fit the literature with which you pair them.  I have looked through the assessed curriculum TEA published for 5th-10th and pulled elements listed there specifically to try to align these as much as possible, given that we only have a few “real” examples from TEA.

There are four sections to this resource-

Informative, Single Passage, Literary Prompts

Informative, Single Passage, Nonfiction Prompts

Informative, Paired Passages, Multigene prompts

Argumentative Prompts - Essay and Correspondence

In each section, I've given a wording template to follow, and ideas of "plug in" concepts you can use to create a prompt that would fit the literature you are wanting to pair with the prompt.

There are also several example prompts given for each section.

I've also included a video of me going over it all with you in case that is helpful, a link to my free ECR formatted prompt template, and a comprehensive list of all the prompts TEA has given us so far.
