WHAT IS WORD BLENDING AND WORD SEGMENTING:
Word blending and word segmenting are two important skills for developing phonemic awareness, which is the understanding that words are made up of individual sounds, or phonemes.
Word blending involves putting together individual sounds to make a word. For example, if a student hears the sounds /b/ /a/ /t/, they can blend those sounds together to form the word "bat."
This skill is important for reading because it allows students to decode words they encounter in texts.
Word segmenting, on the other hand, involves breaking a word into its individual sounds. For example, if a student hears the word "bat," they can segment it into the individual sounds /b/ /a/ /t/. This skill is important for spelling because it allows students to represent the sounds they hear in words using letters.
To help students develop these skills, teachers can use a variety of activities and exercises, such as clapping out the syllables in words, using sound boxes to represent the sounds in words, and playing games that involve blending and segmenting sounds. It's important to provide plenty of practice and repetition to help students become more proficient in blending and segmenting words.
