What educators are saying

I used this with my small group of homeschooled students as our spine to the scientific method. It was easy for my younger student to keep up while I was able to expand a little on the materials to give my older kids more "meat". Great resource!
I liked starting the year with this unit on the Scientific Method. For the most part I focus on dimensional analysis, precision and accuracy, etc. The bouncy ball lab was a great first week project. The kids loved it and were laughing and learning the entire time.

Description

This bundle includes 12 days worth of lessons and activity ideas for teaching the scientific method through inquiry. If you’re teaching the scientific method or a unit on scientific inquiry check out this incredible bundle of resources! This has student notes and homework with solutions, task cards, graphic organizers and lab report templates.

I’ve always had great success explicitly teaching my students how to do each part of the scientific method. This is NOT a brief overview of the scientific method; this resource is in-depth and will take at least a week of class time. You can make this a longer unit by pairing it with a great inquiry experiment like borax bouncy balls or gyrocopters. The time investment at the start of the year makes experiments take less time throughout the rest of the course. I have included my 12-day pacing guide for this unit based on the borax bouncy ball experiment.

What’s included in the zipped folder? OVER 100 pages of AWESOME STUFF!

• Student notes and homework in PDF and EDITABLE .docx formats! (20 pages)

• Solutions to student notes in PDF and EDITABLE .docx formats! (22 pages)

• 20 Scientific Method exit cards to use as quick checks throughout this unit in 3 different PDF formats! (55 pages)

• A Lab Report Template in PDF and .docx document that you can share with your students to use on their own lab reports! (2 pages)

• a RERUN conclusion template in PDF format and editable PowerPoint file. (1 page)

• Scientific Inquiry Graphic organizers with teacher guide in PDF format(10 pages)

Scientific Method Student Notes and Homework with Full Solutions

This covers the following topics:

• The Scientific Method

• 3 Types of Variables: Independent, Dependent and Controlled

• Writing a Testable Question

• Writing a Scientific Hypothesis

• Writing an Experimental Design

• Writing a Procedure

• Creating a Materials List

• Observation Tables

• Writing a Conclusion (RERUN format)

• Lab Report Format with Tips

Full solutions are included for the notes. I’ve included the components of focused instruction in the notes so students will have modelled examples, guided practice and independent practice. There is opportunities for group work and ideas for a bulletin board included. This is completely editable. I like to work through the notes with my students on my document camera and give them time to practice with their groups and individually.

Scientific Method Task Cards

The 20 Task Cards cover

• definitions

• identifying types of variables

• writing a testable question

• writing a scientific hypothesis

I have included 3 different formats:

• 1 per page – great for posting around the classroom or projecting on a screen.

• 4 per page – great for group work and giving students different questions on related topics.

• the same 4 per page – great for printing out the same card for every student.

I like to use these as entrance and exit cards to have a quick check if my students are understanding the material.

Scientific Inquiry Graphic Organizers

If you want to get rid of cookie-cutter labs and have your students design their own experiments you’ll need this! You’ll get:

• Teacher Guide

• The Inquiry Starburst (both US English and UK English versions)

• An example of the Inquiry Starburst

• Hints on how to effectively use the Inquiry Starburst

• The Variable Organizer with room to record the question, hypothesis, controlled variables and room to explain how those variables will be controlled

• An example of the Variable Organizer

• Hints on how to effectively use the Variable Organizer

These graphic organizers have absolutely changed the way my students understand scientific inquiry and the role of variables. Since I have started using these two, simple graphic organizers the students’ grasp of the purpose of the independent, dependent and controlled variables is much stronger than in previous years. These are very easy to implement and can be used in general science course or in senior physics, biology and chemistry.

Lab Report Templates for Students

It is so much easier to mark lab reports if they actually LOOK like lab reports. Give your students a head start with these editable templates that they can use to write their conclusions and lab reports. You’ll get:

• A Lab Report template made in Microsoft Word with the titles of each section and tips for your students. Includes an editable .docx file and a PDF file

• A RERUN Conclusion template your students can use to write their scientific conclusions. Includes an editable PowerPoint file and a PDF file.

Holy Smokes! There is a lot in this bundle! Check out the Preview above for a closer look! It’s worth every penny!
