What educators are saying

This resource was engaging and helped me get insight into a child with selective mutism! I liked all the prompts/statements it gave.
This resource is a wealth of information/knowledge! I didn't use the flash cards to ask the questions at the end of the document but instead presented them verbally since my student is an 8th grader. This worked great for us!

Description

Is it just me, or is selective mutism on the rise? I am seeing kids with this debilitating disorder more and more in our schools these days, and treating them appropriately can be real a challenge. Start with this resource! It's been my go-to for helping children or school teams over the past 10 years.

Read the reviews and download the preview to learn more.

For children with selective mutism, this activity helps the child to communicate their thoughts and feelings about talking...without having to speak. Going through this important process can help you discover the possible root of the mutism, identify situations that may facilitate or hinder speaking, and build trust with the student. Hopefully, this will help you establish goals for your client or student and learn what activities or in what situations the student would be most likely to speak.

This can be an eye-opening activity to use with any child with any kind of communication disorder. I made this product for my own use with my own students with selective mutism but then discovered that it was helpful with ALL of my students! This exercise of opening up about the feelings surrounding any speech disorder is an important step in the therapeutic process. My products are always used in my own therapy before I offer them to you.

About this resource

Here's what you'll get:

2 sorting mats (“yes, I agree” and “no, I do not agree”)

► 70 cards with statements about communication. The child (or children) can choose a card, read it (or you can read it to them), and sort it according to how they feel about it - AGREE or DISAGREE. ✭ I like to sort some of the cards myself, too, to show my students that everyone big and small has strong, personal feelings about communication.

► Extensive information about the process I've had success with when treating selective mutism and evidence-based research to help you understand the disorder- all in alignment with ASHA's recommendations for assessment and therapy.
