Multiple intelligences need not be daunting to leaders or learners at middle, secondary or college classes. Yes, they replace lectures as a way to deliver key points of any lesson - but service is a great place to awaken many of these hidden or unused talents.

Find practical supports to expand learning and assessment approaches, in task-packed service kit.Display posters in your learning community, using these materials, and teens will begin to identify new approaches proven to raise both motivation and achievement.

Ten task-related posters included in this kit will give you and your students dozens of easily adapted learning tasks that play into students’ strengths, and engage them in community service at the same time.

Learners can glance up daily to see practical suggestions in each poster. Watch them begin to awaken their unique intelligences. Challenge them to try different posters weekly as they learn to express new knowledge, using Howard Gardner’s eight distinctive ways of knowing.

In this service kit learners develop and use eight distinctive intelligences:

1). Mathematical-logical intelligence includes scientific or mathematical ability, the capacity to discern logical or numerical patterns, and the ability to handle long chains of reasoning.

2). Verbal-linguistic intelligence includes speaking; poetic or journalistic ability; sensitivity to the sounds, rhythms, and meanings of words; and understanding the various functions of language.

3). Musical-rhythmic intelligence includes the ability to compose music and play an instrument; the ability to produce and appreciate rhythm, pitch, and timbre; and the appreciation of various forms of musical expressiveness.

4). Visual-spatial intelligence includes navigator’s and sculptor’s abilities and the capacity to perceive the visual-spatial world accurately.

5). Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence includes the ability to dance and engage in athletics, the ability to control one’s body movements, and the ability to handle objects skillfully.

6). Interpersonal intelligence includes the capacity to discern and respond appropriately to the moods, temperaments, motivations, and desires of other people.

7). Intrapersonal intelligence includes accurate self-knowledge, access to one’s feelings and the ability to discriminate among them, and the ability to draw on one’s feelings to direct behavior.

8). Naturalistic intelligence includes an ability to draw on patterns and designs in nature in order to solve real-world problems.

The included posters convert Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligence into practical Mita service tasks that provide students and faculty opportunities to understand and use their intelligences as tools for learning through serving.

Included materials are designed to flex with your learning goals, so that you can select one or many tasks to get your service component off the ground. For instance, students can select an intelligence to develop their own service plan. Or an entire class can brainstorm and execute a service strategy together.

Create integrated units that enable disciplines to progress together across departments. Or you may wish to work with one or two additional classes at first until you catch your stride. The key will be to make choices at the onset – that offer measurable service takeaways at the end.
