What educators are saying

This activity created some great discussion among my students. It was great to have two versions of the contract depending on the needs of my students.

Description

In this Sharecropping and Reconstruction primary source activity, students analyze a sharecropping contract that was offered during Reconstruction and examine the unfair clauses to showcase just how unfair life was for sharecroppers. Students can work individually or in teams to dissect the sharecropper contract, but the overall goal is the same, to showcase just how unfair these contracts were for the freedmen. Once finished, students produce a short writing piece to explain what they believe were the most unfair clauses. A modified contract is also included to assist lower-level readers.
