What educators are saying
This is an amazing resource! It helped my students better understand the material we covered in class. Thanks!
Description
Students will learn to simplify square roots involving multiplication and division of radicals as well as radicals with variables.
Start by reviewing the prerequisite skills (prime factorization, perfect squares, ordering square roots from least to greatest). Then go through the 4 types of examples with students, emphasizing the key concepts involved. Each example corresponds with a guided practice problem. After the lesson, check for understanding by having students complete the 10 practice problems at the end.
Example 1: Multiplying Square Roots
Example 2: Simplifying Square Roots (integers only)
Example 3: Simplifying Square Roots with Variables
Example 4: Rationalizing the Denominator (includes using conjugates)
These notes are simple yet thorough and will help students stay organized so that they can refer back to these examples again and again.
Reinforce this concept with these review activities:
Simplifying Radicals - Partner Activity
Simplifying Radicals - Concentration Game

CCSS8.EE.A.2
Use square root and cube root symbols to represent solutions to equations of the form ๐นยฒ = ๐ฑ and ๐นยณ = ๐ฑ, where ๐ฑ is a positive rational number. Evaluate square roots of small perfect squares and cube roots of small perfect cubes. Know that โ2 is irrational.
CCSSHSN-RN.A.2
Rewrite expressions involving radicals and rational exponents using the properties of exponents.
