Description
Students independently and effectively discover the concepts behind Slope.
You be the facilitator!
Most students just accept equations and theorems as a given in math. But, in many cases, the theorems and equations are just an extension of what they already know or have previously studied. So, they are quite capable of discovering them on their own, given some guided instruction.
In Geogebra, the user can move points with the click of a mouse. Students can also click on check boxes to turn on (and off) automatically updated points, lines and calculations to help them understand how slope is determined. This allows them to explore at their own pace and to gradually and fully build up all the necessary concepts behind the critical concept of slope.
Through step-by-step discovery process worksheets, students gradually uncover each important detail behind slope. This allows them to clearly see its derivation and thus better understand its application. The graphics in Geogebra are visually appealing and the lines in the circle are color coded to help students identify each of the measurements required. All very helpful to fully understand and to apply the concepts learned.
Geogebra, a free program, is quickly and easily downloaded from the internet to both computers and tablets (as an app). Students can work individually in a computer lab or you can use a single computer and projector and work through the exercise as a group. Alternatively, you could use the flipped classroom model and have them complete the exercise at home allowing class time to further develop the ideas presented.
Six pdf pages of guided exercises, questions and calculations along with two geogebra files will provide your students with a complete resource to fully and independently explore this topic.
