What educators are saying

This was a great resource to use! It had flexibility within to let it easily fit my room while still providing structure and steps. It was personal and students were invested in their pieces. A great way to keep them engaged at the end of the year!
I love this activity! There is so much material to work with and the examples are awesome. I have used it two years in a row and I think it is just an awesome way to connect with students. I use it as a personal narrative and it works very well. Thank you for a great resource!

Great to pair with your writer's workshop, this is an activity your students will be SINGING about for years to come!

“The Soundtrack of My Life” is approximately a thirteen day unit that I teach to my sixth grade writing classes. The lessons are meant for a 45 minute class period and can be used for in-person and virtual students. This project allows students to explore the questions: “What events in your life define you?” “If your life was a movie, what songs would underscore the important moments?” and “How would you want an audience to feel while watching these important ‘scenes’ in your life?” Students will explore these questions by writing 3 stories about the biggest moments in their lives. They will study the meaning of mood and how authors & movie directors elicit certain feelings from their audiences through elements such as word choice and music. To show their understanding of these concepts, students will choose 3 songs to represent each life event. Then, they will imbed the lyrics, portray the mood, and explain their reasoning in their stories. After writing their stories, students will create an album cover with images and symbols that represent their life moments. It is a great way to get to know your students on a deeper level and to give your students a chance to explore what is most important to them. This product contains everything you need to introduce, plan for, and guide your students through the writing process. It can be paired with other mini lessons that you may have, and is great for writer’s workshop. There are six Google Slides activities. These slides were designed to be used with Chromebooks/laptops and may not work to their full extent on a tablet. Some directions can be edited on Google Slides, but not all. The PDF documents attached to this product can be printed and assembled as a notebook for in-person learners. I have included a breakdown of each activity/lesson that details how I use each part of the resource presentation in my own classroom. There is a lot of freedom in how you choose to incorporate these resources and I hope you enjoy doing this with your kids just as much as I do!
