What educators are saying

My students were able to create painted houses and gain a small understanding of some geometry terms.
My students loved learning about this for our Africa Lesson in STEM. I loved to see how their houses were all different. The slideshow made it super easy for me as not much prep was needed. Great buy!!!

Description

Introduce students to the Ndebele community of South Africa, and learn how this small community is famous for its beadwork, attire, and painted houses!

This product includes the following, all as Adobe files:

  1. An images file in a slideshow format with embedded lessons on each slide. Lessons explore the Ndebele community and the heritage they display in their arts and crafts. There is no printout needed.
  2. An art project with step-by-step instructions for making an Ndebele painted house, full of color and geometric patterns symbolizing secret codes only the community and painter really know.
  3. An optional lesson covering basic geometry terms that will be used by students in art project, such as shapes (lines, rectangles, squares, circles, and triangles), parallel lines, and isosceles triangles (where 2 sides are equal).

Materials needed to make one art piece include 1/2 a sheet of standard size white card stock, a sheet of brown or tan standard size card stock, construction paper for backing, markers in assorted colors, bark/pine straw collected from outside (alternatively, can use scrunched up strips cut from brown paper lunch bags), glue, and scissors. No printables are included and no rulers are needed - students will design their own Ndebele patterns on their homes without rulers or straight edges, just like the Ndebele have done.

TESTIMONIALS ABOUT OUR PRODUCTS

"In my nearly 30-year career in education, I have never seen children so engaged in their learning! International Travel Academy is truly a multi-disciplinary approach that enables children to explore the world in an unforgettable way. Students get a real sense of what it means to respect another country's heritage, beliefs and ways of living, thus making them more tolerant and internationally-minded. I highly recommend this program to educators and parents wishing to make learning come to life!"

“(The five-day program) has given our school the unique opportunity to provide students with incredible experiences that align so well with our IB focus. Each spring with family and community support, our school essentially is transformed into our country of study for one full week. Teachers are easily able to follow the daily curriculum and activities provided, and the students truly enjoy this special week of instruction. From the art projects to festive food tastings, cultural dress, music, dance and traditions, the students spend this entire week engaged in new and exciting experiences of a new country. I would encourage all schools (IB, or not) to jump in and make a week like this happen for their students. It is incredibly gratifying to spend this week with kids as they come together to learn and share experiences like these across grade levels, school-wide. When we hear such rich discussion in classrooms and read their detailed writing about what they've learned as part of (the) week, it makes all the preparation, planning and expense totally worth it!! “
