What You Get!:
1. Introductory Quiz: Introduce the mini-unit with the included 9 question GOOGLE Slides, PowerPoint-style quiz regarding Francis Scott Key and the Star Spangled Banner. The quiz is a fun way to introduce and learn about the United States National Anthem. In addition to the 9 questions and revealing answers, this Google Slide presentation includes historical photos from the actual Fort McHenry, audio links, and video links to add to your lesson. The questions themselves are presented as whole group and may take approximately 10-20 minutes depending upon discussion. I like to make it a competition and give out candy prizes for the winners! Teacher directions are included!
2. Reading Comprehension: Students will read a historical article summary regarding Francis Scott Key, the War of 1812, and the story of how the National Anthem came to be. Included is a double-sided worksheet with 11 comprehension questions.
3. Creative Writing: We sing this song at every game, but what does it really mean? The individual creative writing activity allows students to read the National Anthem and re-write it to include modern vocabulary. This is a nice follow-up activity to use in class or distribute for homework!
