Description

Student sheets & close reading questions for Unit 1 Week 4 The Horned Toad Prince, Pearson Common Core 2013

If you are:
-unsure how to teach close reading using Common Core Standards along with the main selection
or
want your students to start have more accountability while they read the main selection

this download is for you.

There are 2 main problems with this reading series.
1. This reading series was written BEFORE COMMON CORE standards were implemented. Even though the book says Common Core, Common Core standard numbers were inserted wherever they fit after the book was already written. If you are a state that has adopted Common Core, or Florida, you are not hitting all the Common Core standards if you use this series/Teacher's Edition.

2. When it comes to the main selection in the fairly new reading series by Pearson 2013, I really feel it is the teacher who is doing all of the work. The new reading series is jam-packed with a lot of stuff for the teacher to use with the students before and after reading the main selection, however, all the accompanying questions and suggestions for the main selection can only be found INSIDE the Teacher's Edition. This is a huge problem because it means that the teacher is the one doing all the work deciphering through which questions to ask and what activities to do. Not only does that take a lot of prep time, how does the teacher know that the students are actually getting what they are supposed to out of the main selection? In addition, the students are hearing and answering only oral questions. How can this possibly help students prepare for rigorous state tests?

Use my download to help ensure you are hitting the additional missing standards.

This download includes 3 days worth of student sheets to go along with the main selection "The Horned Toad Prince" Use as you wish by condensing them into 2 days or keeping them as 3 and adding vocabulary study, a paired text, or the weekly assessment to fill your other days.
If you just want a simple yet strong 30 minutes of CORE reading block, use these student support sheets. Some of what you'll find on my sheets is mentioned in the TE, just not in a user-friendly format. And I have also added some additional activities as I saw fit based on my 22 years of teaching 4th grade.
Day 1
Word study
Genre introduction/Story prediction
Skill of the week introduction (Author's Purpose)
Day 2-3
Close reading questions on a student-friendly template ensuring improved student participation and student accountability.
